Phil Porter was born in 1946 in Madison, WI. Phil was institutionalized at Southern Wisconsin Colony in Racine between the formative years of 8 and 21, because of cognitive disabilities, seizures and hyper activity. Phil began creating art in 1978 as a way to get away from people and the noise of life. As he says, “Art is therapy for me. It creates a whole new world.” Phil likes to say that he has sold more paintings than Van Gogh. He is also proud to note that his great-grandfather, Lew F. Porter, is the architect who designed the State Capitol, the Old Red Gym/Armory, Science Hall and other prominent buildings in Madison. He enjoys painting the buildings, which his great-grandfather designed. Phil is a passionate artist, who works on 13 paintings at a time! (Thirteen is his lucky Bingo number.) As Phil notes, “I think I am the art, not the artist”.

Roy loves to do painting, drawing, woodworking and ceramics in his studio. Roy reports, “When I’m painting I feel happier and more normal than at any other time in my life. I love color. It can make me feel so alive. I’m not sure you will understand, but color is very real for me. Just imagine how it would feel to not be able to talk. If you can really imagine that, then you can begin to understand what my art means to me.”
